International Children's Day is taking place June 1, 2013, and to celebrate the occasion, Bilaal is taking part in an initiative he started five years ago where he will live life without shoes for three days to raise awareness about child poverty in the developing world. As they say, “You never really know someone until you walk a mile in their shoes,” so Bilaal’s taking it a step further: he’s going BAREFOOT!
He is asking fellow students, teachers and the general public to do the same to better understand the struggles faced by underprivileged children in the developing world – many of whom cannot afford shoes, let alone attend school or even know where their next meal is coming from.
Bilaal is urging everyone on June 1st - whether at work or at school - to go barefoot. Even better, people can get friends, family or neighbours to sponsor them, and that money can be given to your favourite children's charity. Bilaal is especially asking students to speak with their teachers and principals to see if their classes or entire school can kick off their shoes and participate as well.
